Deputy Director of News, Sports Director, Sports Presenter, Sports Reporter
Michael Thompson joined Channel Nine Perth in 1987 where he worked on the police round for two years.
At that time the Josef Schwab murders in the Kimberley and Australia’s most wanted man, John Freidrich, was making headline news. When Freidrich was apprehended by major crime squad detectives Michael and the Channel Nine news crew were the only media to witness the apprehension.
After two years on the police round Michael took on the job of sports presenter.
During his years at Channel Nine, Michael has covered the Olympic Games in Atlanta and Sydney, as well as the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Canada and the Commonwealth Games in Kula Lumpur in 1998. He has also covered AFL Grand Finals and has commentated the Cricket.
In late 1996 Michael became the host of Channel Nine Perth’s newest lifestyle program Just Add Water. Just Add Water has so far enjoyed 9 highly successful seasons.
In 2001 Michael was also the inaugural host of Channel Nine’s fishing program Fishing Western Australia.
Another aspect of working at Channel Nine that Michael really enjoys is the chance to produce special one-hour programs such as the David Dicks Story, which has been one of the highest rating locally produced shows out of Perth.
In his 25 years as a newspaper and television journalist Michael has been fortunate enough to win several awards for football and cricket reports…including the award for Best Television News or Feature Story for the last three years in the WA Football Media Awards. [Also in 2001 he received a WA Clear Speech Award]
In 2002 Michael added Executive Producer to his professional credits when he worked on Nine’s local football chat show ‘Cometti Live’ with Dennis Cometti.
These days Michael keeps fit by swimming, jogging and doing the odd triathlon and/or marathon. In 2001 he ran the 42km WA Marathon and has taken part in the Rottnest Swim.
